SAFETY NOTES - A SHORT LIST
11.15.07
Check your tires' pressures: I am seeing a lot of underinflated tires.
Have your boiler serviced: a new fuel filter, plus other new parts may save you from a misfiring, start failure, or even the dreaded "puff back", later.
Draining your plumbing but leaving the heat on-low? Pour a couple of cups of swimming pool/RV antifreeze into all your sinks, DW, toilets, and tubs so they don’t freeze up should the power fail for more than 36 hours or so.
Keep your heat between 50-55 degrees, for "closed", but heated, homes. This will maintain a proper buffer for 98% of any power failure periods around the NW corner during the cold Winter months.
Wood stove chimneys should be cleaned more than once during a high-use heating system, especially if damped down and burned low for long periods. Soot build-up is the primary potential cause of chimney fires.
NEVER close a flue damper until a fire is completely out! Believe it or not, this has been done (with fire places still "warm", with very bad consequences.
If you have a well sealed (older) home, and are using a fireplace or wood stove, be sure you have some source for allowing some fresh air into a home.
Finally, keep fresh batteries in your smoke detectors; don’t take dead batteries out without replacing them.
07.17.08 IS CURRENT PRICING, CORRECT PRICING?
The ever changing real estate market has not been kind to many sellers over the past several months and weeks.
06.05.08 NOTES FOR THE MONTH
Costs are going up for home operation at all levels; it will be interesting to see what heating oil, propane, and electric pricing will be for this coming heating season.
