BUGS: WHAT CAN BE DONE?
08.06.09
There have been numerous discussions about bug infestations around our NW corner. Applicable to real estate, they come in the form of questions from possible buyers as they 'waltz' around looking at our beautiful area.
There is no question in my mind that there has been a significant rise in flying insects. Extremely wet weather has made it a banner year for mosquitos; a reported (up to) 75% reduction in the bat population has allowed these pests, and other bugs to thrive this season. I can easily see thicker swarms of bugs in the air at night. Two years ago, I reported a count of bats living under the metal roof of my house in excess of 275. This year, if I have 30, I have yet to see that many come out at dusk. The so-called 'white nose' disease has certainly decimated their numbers.
So, what can be done as we swat mosquitoes and flail away at moths or other flying insects? One, apparently effective solution: spray.
One area company is doing a very effective job in this battle; I will plug Peerless Tree Experts in New Marlboro, MA (413-229-8689), although others may also provide a similar bug spraying service.
Peerless claims a 'fix' to the bug nuisance that will last 3 weeks or so and survive the heavy rains we have experienced this summer. An associate of my office has sprayed her property and so far it is remarkably bug free, even being on the back of a swamp!
