09.24.09 Okay. Summer's over. Leaves are falling, trees are changing color, and it is time to put your home into its Winter mode. This means changing screens, putting up, or sliding down, storm windows, test firing your heating system if it has been off all summer, and checking computer thermostats for battery life-power, timer settings, etc. Of the above, making sure your boiler will fire up properly the first time you call for heat, is the most important. Furnaces not used during the summer, and they mostly include all systems not also heating hot water supplies, are most prone to possible miss-fires the first time they are called on to produce heat. Damp basement conditions can be the biggest cause of this problem. Moisture penetrates electrical circuitry; it can also cause corrosion conditions inside furnace 'chambers', and other 'effects' that might produce a miss-fire. There is nothing worse that a 'back fire' that might send a sooty, oily blast of air throughout a house. If you use propane, the above problem won't occur; that is the oily, sooty air is known to cover everything it touches. For do-it-yourselfers, go to your thermostat, turn it up to create a demand for heat, and listen for the furnace to 'fire' up. If it doesn’t start almost immediately, turn the thermostat back down and call for service. Even recently serviced systems can fail the first time heat is needed. All the other pointers above are simple maintenance procedures. Finally, a recent check of oil prices found one supplier at $2.24/gallon. ©2009 R. Leech features.
