SHORT SUBJECTS

Mortgage rates are at historic lows currently. A 30 year fixed mortgage is available for under 5% this week, or it was when I penned this column. 4.9% was the rate at many banks. This was without buy downs. Jumbo rates are a bit higher. Rates can change daily, these days.

Leaves are falling and filling up roofing gutters and down spouts. For optimal winter operation, and to help against ice build-up that can result in possible penetration of water under roofing, they should be cleaned.

The $8000 first home buyer tax credit ends in November, unless further extended. While it has not been a great stimulus for real estate around our corner, there could be excellent benefits if purchases were made within the remaining, or extended, 'window'.

Do you have any 'cloudy' windows in your home? If so, it is most likely in sealed thermo-pane window glass that has lost its seal, letting moisture in. The main solution is replacement. It certainly can 'cloud' your view of the outside!

If you are a reader of this column and have a special car that deserves a superb inside storage facility for the winter, give me a call.

Finally, my heating oil quote last week found one supplier at $2.24/gallon. In Vermont this past weekend, I saw it offered at $2.14/gallon. That won't help us, but it does tell me that it should be available at prices, below the earlier pre-sale rates, at least for the next couple of months, I hope..

TECHNOLOGY
The Dutchess County Fair in Rhinebeck ended over the weekend and, for fair lovers, it offers an extraordinary array of booths that should satisfy anyone on almost any level. For a technologist such as myself, it did not disappoint.
