10.22.09 It is amazing what I find in homes that I show. Over the weekend, I was in one home that had the heat on. In a bedroom with a thermostat set at 70 degrees, the windows open! I also was in a home where the fireplace dampers were (both) open. Quite a (heat) draft going up the chimney(s). It is one thing to let a fire go completely out before closing them, however it is 'another' to not have had a fire at all, and have the dampers open! Naturally both of the above 'discoveries' totally counter any conservation efforts for the owners, but it brings to mind that some homes may have had dampers open all summer - not a bad idea at times, and windows too. So, the next time you are at your home, readers, check attics, seldom used rooms, and your fireplaces to see that windows and dampers are closed. Other tips to help conserve include, checking your programmable timers, or heating/cooling thermostats, and resetting them to the correct time. Where relevant, drop the storm panels on combination storm/screen windows, improve any worn weather stripping on exterior doors, and add insulation where there is none, or minimal present. It is amazing how much fuel can be saved doing these few things. It is too bad that our Fall colors look a bit 'flat' this year, but the winds have blown off the leaves and for whatever reason, the reds are lacking. ©2009 R. Leech features.
