10.29.09 This is another of my occasional columns into house mechanics and service-tip suggestions. Homes with warm air and/or AC systems convey their heating and cooling through ductwork. They rely on filters to keep the air free of dust, pollen, etc, and the condition of those filters are crucial functional efficiency, and also to keeping airborne allergens to a minimum. Sometimes these filtration systems are of an electronic, electrostatic type; they rely on a different mechanism to remove particulate matter. These latter systems may not have replaceable filters, but do have on/off switches that need to remain on when in use. They use no electricity if the furnace is not operating, as far as I can tell as I have that in my home. If there is use, it is minor.. The 'cartridge' filters however, do need to be changed periodically as they collect a great amount of particulates during the course of a heating season. I have recently observed one that is 'ready' for replacement. When 'dirty' they can slow down airflow significantly. This slows the warming or cooling of the home when in operation; this will use more fuel. If not changed, they also can be 'hosts' for mold, thereby possibly allowing unhealthy air to circulate. For do-it-yourselfers, most filters are an easy self-servicing job, although you must know where ALL the filters are located if there are more than one. Many slip in or out of a slot within the ductwork; others require removing a few screws to a vent cover allowing easy replacement. Finally, DAYLIGHT SAVINGS ENDS SATURDAY NIGHT. Reset your clocks and timers if they control operating systems in your home. © 2009 R. Leech features.
