11.05.09 These two devices are fixtures in most homes that are marketed around our area. Both put out heat; one also can take considerable heat out of a home. Fireplaces are generally more desirable from an 'ambiance' point of view; if it is of a 'Rumford' design, it is also a very functional heat emitter since it is shallow and tall. Many other designs are not so efficient and will often 'pull' more heat out of the house, than actually contribute to it. Wood stoves are more functional than fireplaces. They are enclosed 'boxes' or of similar shape. The fire is normally totally contained within, heating up the 'box' making it a 'radiator' of heat. While it 'breathes' by using (some) air, it is much more efficient at heating the interior. Wood stoves are also safer in one sense in that there are no open orifices out of which sparks or embers from a lingering fire will 'spill'. One can retire in the evening without having to put it out. However, chimney cleaning should be more frequent with wood stove use. Often they burn 'cold', and this creates creosote/soot build-up in a chimney more quickly than fireplace use normally does. Also many wood stoves are connected to metal chimneys, not safer, brick chimneys. It is crucial that these metal chimneys are kept in EXCELLENT, not good, condition. ©2009 R. Leech features.
