11.26.09 With the onset of Winter, cold temperatures are back, and so are our smoky valleys. A few weeks ago, the smoky 'aroma' had descended into the outside air at my home, signifying that a wood stove, or furnace, had been re-started for the coming season. Last Thursday, on my drive to the office, the entire valley between Hotchkiss School and Sharon had a blue haze 'settled in', below the elevation you reach on Route 41, en route to Lakeville. This is likely to be an increasing 'condition' as wood furnace/stove use increases around our NW CT area. I am not aware of any recent town ordinances controlling/limiting installation of the recently marketed outdoor sited, 'wood' furnaces. Wood stoves, which are indoor appliances, have never been banned or otherwise regulated, and I suppose, should not be. Added to these two heat sources, is the 'smoker' at 'When Pigs Fly' on West Main Street that is smoking daily, producing excellent barbecue choices for lunch goers. Many of you may know that the First Time Homebuyer's Credit was extended into 2010. What you may not (yet) know, is that if you are an existing home owner who has lived in your home CONSECUTIVELY for 5 of the last 8 years, a tax credit of up to $6500 is available should you buy a new home during this 'new' period. This bill is designed to continue a stimulation of primary real estate home purchases in a market that is still very 'shaky'. I'm afraid it does not offer much stimulus for the weekend/2nd home- buyer segment of the market that drives many our real estate sales around here. ©2009 R. Leech features.
