12.03.09 AUDUBON SHARON is having a workshop on SATURDAY DECEMBER 5th between 10AM and 1PM on the Asian Longhorned Beetle. That is 2 days from this week's paper. Originally sourced from China, along with the Emerald Ash Borer, both beetles thrive on wood and are borers. They apparently arrived here in wooden pallets and packing material containing Chinese imports. Larvae love firewood. Connecticut wants a 'Statewide Watch' for these two pests and this task will be discussed at the Saturday workshop. What can it mean for homeowners? Well, firewood is the main possible host for the larvae so, if you have a stack of firewood sitting outside your home, or inside, perhaps in the basement, a wood carrier near or beside your fireplace(s), you could unwittingly be harboring these pests inside your home, possibly resulting in their travelling into other parts of the house. Building inspections in old homes often found evidence of powder post beetles, evidenced by pin-sized holes in the beam-work. I have seen firewood riddled with similar, or larger sized holes which mean that boring beetles or the larvae might be present. The inside warmer house temperatures could cause migration from the wood to other places in the home. Now this isn't the most pleasant subject to discuss here, but here it is, to add to other pests that can enter a home during the cold winter months! ©2009 R. Leech features.
