1.07.10 Real cold weather finally hit our NW corner and wood stoves, wood furnaces, plus all other heating systems are now working overtime to keep everyone comfortable. Here is my run-down on a few relevant subjects, based on cold weather. Electric heat is the most reliable heat system, albeit a bit more expensive, than other types, if only because, other than electrical outages in general, there is no fuel to 'run-out-of'. Keep the heat at 50 degrees or above, when away. Automatic fuel delivery is preferred to calling for a delivery. Suppliers' computer systems are generally more reliable in 'scheduling' fuel needs, than owners, due to variable weather patterns. For all house conditions other than steam heating systems, if you are not using your home regularly, TURN OFF your well pumps or municipal water lines to avoid home flooding should a pipe burst during your absence. Finally, if you have been burning a wood stove constantly, have the chimney cleaned at least twice during any heating season. Adhering to the above advice may save you a BIG problem during all sub zero weather. ©2010 R. Leech features.
