01.28.10 The Sunday and Monday rains that hit our NW corner this past week caused problems in several homes around the area. First, with the ground frozen solid, water did not absorb down into the ground, therefore running against foundations, and in many cases into basements that might normally see little water penetration at other times. Roofs also were tested, and homes with failing roofing shingles, dried out and cracked sealant, often used around skylights, and aging flashing, generally found around chimneys, saw water penetration into interior house parts. High wind can aggravate such problems as it can blow the water sideways into crevices, and other areas that otherwise would keep water out from such wind "affect". For example, in one old home I was in, water found its way in around window frames, where such windows had poor fit with the sills. A chimney also saw brick saturation by water that found its way through, from the inside, out onto the interior surface, ending down on the hearth. While these issues result from extreme weather conditions that do not occur on a regular basis, when there is an extreme condition, odd things occur. What can you do? Well, if you are lucky, (or unlucky) enough to be on site and discover such a problem, it is a good idea to mark the problem locations with chalk, or a crayon, for getting the problems fixed. Otherwise live with it. ©2010 R. Leech features.
