02.04.10 Toyota has a BIG problem on its hands. Some of its cars have unintended acceleration problems and if you haven’t heard this news, or read about it, you should pay attention to the following. 8 car lines are involved and the model years go back to the mid-2000 time period, for some lines. Production and sales have been stopped. The problem is with the accelerator module, either mechanical or electronic; at one point it was thought to involve floor mats obstructing the movement of the accelerator pedal. A recall about this came out last Fall, but since then other accidents have occurred and floor mats have possibly been found NOT to be the culprit. It is probably more complex than that. What should you do? First, sit in your driveway and LEARN how to control your car should you experience unintended acceleration. Learn how to turn the engine off OR put the car into neutral-quickly, so the car starts to slow down. Of course USE the brake and push hard on the pedal as part of your actions. Should you stop driving your Toyota? That is your decision. I will continue to drive mine and have yet to have the problem looked at, and fixed. I have had no problem in 20,000 miles but something could happen. I discuss it in more detail on my CAR KEYS radio program heard twice this week: Toyota will fix it, but until they do, know how to shut your car down if it should happen to you.
