02.25.10 Continuing along the home maintenance topic, if you have a sump pump and it has not operated for a year or longer, I would suggest that it be tested at the earliest convenience. Real estate stories exist about failed pumps that are "discovered" only when needed most: the first time the pump is "tested" after months of non-use. The easiest test is to simply run a hose into the pit and have the pump go through several operational cycles confirming its operation. If it fails to start, before considering it "dead", try the following fix. Disconnect the electrical cord, manually try and turn the impeller several revolutions and then re-insert the pump in the pit and see if operates through several cycles. Many times, a simple manual movement of the impeller will bring it back to life. If the above maneuver does not work, you should consider it "failed" and replace it. One final check, be sure the electrical circuit supplying "juice" to the plug is operating as well, since this could also be a cause for non-operation.
