SPRING IS COMING - THINGS TO DO

03.11.10

The three, perhaps 4 & 5, sunny beautiful days in a row, have 'blessed' us after a rotten previous 10 days or so; it actually make me think Spring could be around the corner. The bugs, both inside and out seem to think so as well.

First, you may have to 'step up' your vacuuming/cleaning. The lady bugs, and flies, are coming alive, appearing from all crevices around windows and doors, and swarming toward the windows where many will die. In homes with carpeting, they could well be laying larvae in the carpeting or furniture for the next generation.

Some homes have foundation insulation, in the form of bagged leaves, hay, or other similar material resting against exterior side walls. This can creat a perfect environment for grub bugs, carpenter ants, mice, chipmunks (all probably already present) and other living things to burrow around in. They also promote moisture zones that do nothing good for this part of the home. All should be removed.

Get ready to raise remove or raise the storm windows and replace them with screens. Uncover air-conditioner compressors and test them to see that the fans are not 'frozen' or otherwise impaired from proper operation.

Finally, daylight savings time begins on the 14th. Set your clocks ahead 1 hour.

Okay. Summer's over. Leaves are falling, trees are changing color, and it is time to put your home into its Winter mode.

ENDANGERED PRODUCTS
Europe is phasing out the incandescent light bulb and the 100 watt bulb is apparently the first bulb to be taken off the market in the future.

TECHNOLOGY
The Dutchess County Fair in Rhinebeck ended over the weekend and, for fair lovers, it offers an extraordinary array of booths that should satisfy anyone on almost any level. For a technologist such as myself, it did not disappoint.

IT IS MUSTY INSIDE!!
Keeping ahead of the mildew is probably the greatest task you may face.

ELECTRICITY SUPPLIERS - A MAZE FOR CONFUSION?
Since my last comment on this topic, the list of suppliers has 'exploded', numbering 45 in this latest insert.

WHAT'S IN THE NAME? - NOT FOOD, BUT...
...behind their names, food is what they are all about. THEY are JAM and WHEN PIGS FLY.
